I have always loved music and making things. I am a retired elementary music teacher and currently enjoy teaching private music lessons, leading community singing and creating interactive music exhibits in my music garden. I hope to share these creations with the larger community.

These chimes were made from discarded metal tent poles. The supports are bamboo from the woods near my house. I cut the pipes to make a C pentatonic scale. The chimes are spaced so that when you walk you play a song. The gaps are the rests. I used metal coat hangers to hang them. They are tied in place with curling ribbon. This is easy to remove so that I can change the song periodically. Enjoy the song and the new year!<div><br /></div><div><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/wJQM5aRxpF8" title="YouTube video player" width="420"></iframe></div>Carolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08408040171440876633noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4029888366080145640.post-15430185495686634532020-08-06T13:13:00.007-04:002020-08-06T13:26:35.224-04:00Musical Marble Falls<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">These photos are from August 6, 2020. The video is from back in April when I made this little interactive exhibit in my yard during the stay at home orders due to Covid-19. I had fun being home and working in the yard. The charge is $5.00/class. Pay as you go and no commitment to be there every week. Contact me if you are interested or with any questions.<br />
<br />
<b>World Music Drumming </b>10:00-10:45 (auditorium)<br />
We will play large tubano floor drums which are a cross between conga drums and african djembes as well as smaller percussion instruments and marimbas as we explore drumming traditions from around the world. No previous experience is necessary. <br />
<br />
<b>Recorder Class </b>11-12 (craft room)<br />
Come and enjoy playing music with others as we play an eclectic mix of music with beautiful harmonies. We will do some review of the basics of playing and music reading, but mostly it will be playing songs in three and four parts. This could be an opportunity to learn the alto, tenor or bass if you already play soprano recorder. I have altos for loan or purchase. If you would like to join the class but have never played a recorder, contact me and I can get you started. <br />
<br />

Kids are welcome if accompanied by an adult. No experience is necessary as the classes are designed to make West African and Caribbean drumming traditions accessible to beginners of all ages. Suggested donation is $5.00/class to help with material costs. The location is Plantation Estates Retirement Community (<a href="http://www.actsretirement.org/community-locations/nc/plantation-estates-matthews/directions/" target="_blank">map</a>) in the auditorium. Please let me know if you plan to come so that I will have enough drums and so that I can let you know of any schedule changes. Here is a video from a workshop I went to last summer that gives you an idea of what we will be doing.<br />

My fiddle students will be playing the music. I will teach each dance and we will walk through it slowly before dancing with the fiddle music. If you plan to come just tell the person at the entrance gate that you are there for the fiddle jam and square dance in the auditorium. This event is for all ages. <br />
This is my song, o God of all the nations</div>
<div>
A song of peace for lands afar and mine</div>
<div>
This is my home the country where my heart is</div>
<div>
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine</div>
<div>
But other hearts in other lands are beating</div>
<div>
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My country's skies are bluer than the ocean</div>
<div>
And sunlight beams on clover leaf and pine</div>
<div>
But other lands have sunlight too, and clover</div>
<div>
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine</div>
<div>
Oh hear my song, thou god of all the nation</div>
<div>
A song of peace for their land and for mine</div>

I first learned the tune with these words from an old Girl Scout song book. <br />

Several years ago I was reintroduced to it at my Kodaly music training and learned that the Hungarian words were very different.</div>

If you have lots of people, try it as a round with the formation for the dance being concentric circles. The inner circle starts. The next circle starts after the first group sings "If you dance then". I have done it with three circles. It makes a really cool pattern. Thanks to Georgia Newlin for this great idea.</div>
